the latest firmware, 3.56, has two versions. they are both the same version number.

the first version prevents you from upgrading your drive. it will give a "the data is corrupt" 800f225 error.

Sony released a silent update for this, but you can only get it by actually booting into your PS3 and downloading it through PSN. the website is not up to date.

so a word of warning: do not format your original drive! this is an error on Sony's part, being too interested in thwarting custom firmware/pirates, rather than keeping their OFW operational.

if you format your original drive, you may brick your console.

Gotta hand it to them, they have a good security system surrounding the PS3's software... maybe a bit too good for their own good. So much security it's causing problems for themselves...
A bit like when I keep something in a safe place, then not being able to find where I put it ;)

it is a very good system. however they have a lot to give to the fact that they use blu rays, which have a higher protection scheme on them, and took some time before it was reverse engineered, whereas DVDs have been around for a while, which is why Xboxes where hacked far earlier than them. (also, blank blu rays cost a bomb!)

im just glad they released the patch to fix it.

I have not got my PS3 Slim anymore, i've been an Xbox fan since they launched! I did however enjoy the Blu ray experience. Watched Avatar on Blu Ray, and could see a difference!!!

haha if i could afford blu ray, i would always buy them.

but i cant agree about Xbox, i have one at uni and i just cant be bothered with it. its all green and gimmicky: its like windows, theres so many different types of them.. you have to use them for some things (mainly left4dead) but after a while you get annoyed with it, just like being on bootcamp. :p

Haha fair points. I prefer it for the online community side of things, plus I have been using it for so long that all my friends are on Xbox too. Can't see a permanent shift to PS in the near future for myself.

it is annoying that everyone i know is on xbox too... its cause they are cheap ;) but they are hooked into paying 30 quid a year for Live.
