Macbook os x snow leopard showing formatted capacity

Can anybody please tell me why my macbook running on mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 showing formatted capacity and not actual capacity.

Say teh capacity is 160GB printed on the hdd and the actual capacity is 149GB, but the mac os x is still showing 160gb!!! Seems weird. Unable to find this solution googling!
