What is the processor speed. Anything over 833 mhz (I think) can be upgraded to Leopard

Officially...the minimum cpu speed to install Leopard is 867mhz...but with a program called "Leopard Assist" it's supposed to be possible to install Leopard on slower computers.

But if your iBook is 5 years old...then it should be a faster model...so the 867mhz minimum shouldn't be a problem.

I have an ibook G4, ... , but it won't install leopard either.

And the basis for that statement is...

My guess: you tried it with a gray colored disc. That won't work unless the disc(s) shipped with the same model as yours, or, improbably, with your actual Mac.

THANK YOU all of you. I called the mac shop in my frustration, and was told that this cannot be upgraded but I don't know if they were trying to sell me a newer computer. I have a 1.33 GHz processor, but there's only 512 MB memory; so I wondered if I get a 1GB chip, is it worth it to hang on to the machine or get a new one.
It was a gift so I don't have the original discs. But it's really limited as far as accepting a blackberry device, for instance. And playing you tube vids the sound and film speed don't match up

I tried to download off the web as the ibook was a gift so I don't have the original discs. Wondered if I install a 1GB chip to replace the 512 mb that it has now, would that make a difference? It has a 1.33 GHz processor.

Don't download as that is piracy and not at all popular here. Go out and buy the Leopard OS X.5 full retail install disc, black coloured.

As in illegal copy or file provided by the university you attend?

Sigh. When will it become general knowledge that to transfer ownership of a computer to someone, you need to include the OS disc???
