Your Mac's Specs
09 MBP 8GB ram 500GB HD OS 10.9 32B iPad 4 32GB iPhone 5 iOs7 2TB TC Apple TV3
Some specs on your book will help model, year and processor along with how much ram
which could be the answer right there and how many things you have running at the same time.

Also, it would be worth knowing how much free space you have left on your hard drive.

10 GB free space on the hard disk is not good enough.
Can you free up more space ... like 15% of your total disk capacity ?
( Make sure you have a backup before you start deleting stuff )

Cheers ... McBie

+1 on the free space. Ten gig left is not enough breathing room for your Mac to run the way it was intended.
