Help pls, unknown-00-00-00-00-00-00:~ EXAMPLE NAME$ .

Hey,
I think this is the right place to post, Im new to the forum and to using macs at an in depth level and I would really appreciate some help with getting started in terminal.

I'm aware that upon opening terminal you should receive a welcome message of some sort but instead i get this "unknown-00-00-00-00-00-00:~ EXAMPLE NAME$ ." (I've replaced all original numbers with 0's and user name with the example)

I'm not shore as to why im getting this or how to fix it, all i know is that it seems to be the reason why im having a problem with terminal.

Can anybody help me please?

When you open terminal, you should see a statement that tells your last console login (date, time) and then the name of your machine along with your user name. After that comes the prompt. (cursor)

when i log in to terminal i just get a message like this unknown-00-00-00-00-00-00:~ EXAMPLE NAME$ and nothing else, if i try and input anything the unknown-00-00-00-00-00-00:~ EXAMPLE NAME$ message just comes up again.

Well, something is definitely munged. See if you can create another user account and run the terminal from the new user account. Let us know if it works OK that way.
