Macbook to TV PLEASE HELP!!!!

I am trying to hook my black macbook up to a 42 inch Vizio that is 1080p.
I am using a MINI DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA cable.
I change the input on my TV to PC, but nothing comes up on the TV.
My mac recognizes the external display, but there's no picture!
PLEASE HELP ME TROUBLESHOOT THIS!!

Make sure you have the right resolution set on your MacBook, try 1024 x 768 for a start.

System Preferences - Displays - adjust the resolution for the external monitor to a resolution it will accept via VGA.
The resolution buzzard put up for you is a good starting point.

To find out what resolutions are compatible via VGA, you need to open up the owners manual for the Vizio.
