I really have to object when people say that the look and design isn't worth the extra money. So many things we use regularly don't NEED to be well-designed to work; cars, televisions, phones, etc... yet the design adds immeasurably to the experience of using them. Which is more pleasing to handle on a day to day basis: a clunky brick of plastic or a sleek, light computer made of aluminum? Which is psychologically less chaotic: a computer covered with stickers and blinking lights, or a streamlined, simple finish? Which feels better to touch: a 100% down comforter or one made of a cheaper, polyester blend? All these things do more or less the same job, but the design is what makes them worth the added expense.

Also don't forget that while the price of a base model Windows box may be cheaper, it often (not ALWAYS, mind you, but often) comes within a couple of hundred dollars of the price of a Mac once you upgrade to a comparable screen, hard drive, trackpad, etc.
