powerbook G4 not charging

I recently go a new power cord for my powerbook G4 because the old on shorted out when i plugged it in. I used the computer to get some files off of it while I was waiting for the new cord to come. I used it until the battery was dead and since I've plugged in my new power cord the computer runs but does not charge. It also resets the date and time every time I shut it down. Does anyone know what's happening? I'm sorry if this is a repost. I search-barred.
