Macbook Pro Start Up Loading Bar

Hi everyone,

recently when i restart or turn on my laptop i get the screen with the apple logo and then a loading bar appears. It takes around 7-10 mins to load.

I have reset my PRAM and repaired disk permissions but its still there.

when i verified my disk permissions i get these results:

Does anyone know what the problem could be.

Looks like a Java problem to me, remove whatever you can of Java then reinstall it.

Iv tried this but its still happening

All of those permissions can safely be ignored - full the full list see here.

What peripherals do you have plugged in - unplug them all to see if one of them is causing it.

Does it take a long time to do anything after you boot or only the boot process? This could be the sign of a drive on it's way to the graveyard.

No i have nothing plughed in.

Everything else seems to be running ok. After its boot up it fine..I only have to wait for norton to load and its normal

Are you plugging you laptop in or is the battery running out? That type of loading normally happens when you let your battery get so low, the Mac stores the memory contents to the drive and then has to reload it all when you turn it back on. There is not a loading bar when you normally boot up.

Or did you use a utility or terminal to mess with the sleep settings?

No even when its fully charged it still happens.

Iv looked on other forums and there are mentions of hard drive failure if this is happening, as bobtomay said.

If it's working fine after boot, it is probably not the drive.

Uninstall Norton and see what happens to your boot time. Just a quick google search implicates Norton as being a culprit for slow boot times.

Make sure you use their uninstaller - don't just drag it to the trash, this will not remove it.

(edit: I've had a couple of drives with this symptom now. On top of taking awhile to boot, after I'd reach the desktop I found it taking 30 seconds to minutes to do practically anything. If you don't have a backup, now is a good time to be considering starting - along with schweb's suggestion below to take it in to Apple if you believe that's what it is))

If you think your drive is going bad, then posting here isn't your best option. Get it to an Apple Store to have them check it out.
