• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and I need to buy software for extracting DVD clips to import to iMovie. I used DVDxdv on my other computer buy it would freeze and jump a lot. I don't mind paying but I only want to buy the best one. It needs to have a time counter and be able to get small clips off a DVD. I am using it to make sports highlight videos from DVD's of the games that the school gives me. I also want the best quality video possible and I don't know much about settings. I use iMovie and iDVD but I am considering Final Cut Express. I've tried to read and research but I'm still confused. I even asked at the Apple Store and they were clueless. Please help!

what are you trying to rip?

handbrake will encode video from a dvd to H.264 (mp4)

it wont rip copy protected DVDs, and noone on this forum will tell you how to do that.

HandBrake

if you wanna know a little bit about how to use it, i have a tutorial in the description.

you can make edits in the movie or clip with MPEG streamclip.

Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac OS X

they are both free btw.

I have Handbrake and I like it but you can't take just clips of the DVD, can you? I am making a football highlight video from a DVDs of games so I don't want to put the whole 60 min. game on my computer when I might only need 3 min. of it.
I will try MPEG Streamclip. Thank you for your reply.

if there are multiple vob segments on the dvd you could encode just the segment you wanted. however you would still have to encode the whole segment.
