MiniDVI port not working

I just got a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter so that I could hook my Macbook Pro up to my HDTV, but nothing happens when I connect the two via the adapter and VGA cable. However, when I hook it up to my roommate's Macbook Pro it works just fine. I'm not sure if my MiniDVI port is malfunctioning (I've never used it before) or if there's just some setting I've overlooked.
Any help is greatly appreciated, Mike.

First, using a VGA adapter and cable is not a very good idea. Always use a DVI adapter and DVI cable to your TV or external monitor if a DVI input is available. Much better quality. (digital versus analog)

When you plug in the adapter and then the cable to the TV, does it show up at all in System Preferences, Displays?

It doesn't show up, even if I press Detect Displays. I read somewhere that VGA was better quality so I went with that. Bad idea.

Do you have a mini-DVI or mini displayport? These are not the same thing and the two terms are not interchangeable.

If this is the mini displayport to VGA adapter from Apple, while you have it connected to the TV and TV turned on - head for Software Update - Apple released a firmware update a long time ago for this adapter, so if you got an older version, this may solve the issue.

Disregard the above if it is a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.

And move the front window of Displays preferences. I have seen the preference window for the 2nd display be hiding behind it.

Ok so when I went to check on that update(i have the mini displayport) I connected the tv to my laptop and it worked. However, after I disconnected and tried to reconnect again it didn't work. After constantly reconnecting them again and again it finally worked. Now its not working again at all.

I would exchange the adapter.
