Hello I'm new here and have very little knowledge about the inner workings
of my terrific 2005 eMac.

My 6 yr old Hp printer died. Read the reviews got a great all in one only to discover it is not compatible with my OS X 10.4.11; it needs v10.5 or 10.6. (which seems to be what all new printers require) ugh!

what to do? Can I upgrade, and if so, which one? Would I need to add more memory? is all of this hard to do? is it expensive to do?

this is my only computer. Main uses web surfing, word processing & LOTS of iTunes & iPhotos.

computer specs:

Machine Name: eMac
Machine Model: PowerMac6,4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1

thanks for any advice.

Well, I don't know much about eMacs, but you have a PowerPC and Snow Leopard is only compatible with Intel processors. So, the highest OS you can go is Leopard.

Your eMac can be upgraded to 2 gig of ram...and as "MymacROX" mentioned...the latest OS it can be upgraded to is 10.5.8 "Leopard".

Watch eBay etc for Leopard OS X.5 but make sure you purchase the black retail install DVD and not some silver/gray model specific disc which will not work. Expect to pay $100-$125 for Leopard.

i'd watch craigslist or ebay for a retail copy of leopard which is version 10.5. only buy it if it is a retail copy, as the disks that come with a certain computer will only work on that computer. leopard is great, but is expensive from what i hear!

Really? I'd hardly call $100 - $150 "expensive" for an entirely new/improved OS. Especially when it's a move from Tiger to Leopard. Wouldn't you pay that to go from Vista (or XP) to Windows 7?

i would pay that for any of apples operating system upgrades but don't think id pay $5.00 for any of microsofts windows releases..... i have windows 7 on a new laptop i use at home and leopard on my late 2004 ibook g4 blows windows 7 away!
