External Display Flickers

I have a macbook Pro hooked up to a small advent LCD TV via VGA. The TV has a tendency to flicker a lot or cut out for a second or two and then come back on. Anybody have any idea why this is happening? Is there a recommended setting for resolution?

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook Pro 15" 2014, 2.2GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD, OSX 10.9.5 - iPhone 5s 16gb
Try the different resolutions to find one that is stable, I would suggest starting at 1024 x 768 and working your way up. If the problem persists it could be your adapter or lead thats gonna bad.
