i recently removed the dual layer dvd burner from my toshiba laptop. i would like to put it in a external case and use it with my ibook g4 (combo drive). i'm wondering if the drive will be mac compatiable? the DVD drive is a Hitachi/LG GMA 4020B...

There really is no way to know for sure until you try it. "Most" external optical drives will work right out of the box provided they can be connected via USB or firewire. I bought an inexpensive Samsung dual layer burner for around $29 on line and it worked with my MacBook.
