I have Onyx, but don't use it regularly. I should explore it more, but maybe others can share a routine they use.

Then there are some who say that OS X doesn't need regular maintenance...

I said +1 for Onyx because I have friends who use it and are pretty satisfied with it. I've been a Mac user since 2008 and have had absolutely ZERO problems with it when it comes to maintenance. Never ran any security or maintenance software and the OS is working as it should.

I guess it really depends on the user, not the operating system, though.

There some who still insist the world is flat6 toMACsh.

Personally run the cleaning operations on a monthly basis.

I don't think it is flat. It's kind of lumpy like a blob of partially melted pimento cheese. ;)

I don't recall ever reading anyone here who would say Macs don't need ANY maintenance. I have, among other people, often said that it doesn't need anywhere near the levels of management a PC does however.

I do backups regularly, but maintenance I tend to run about every quarter (three months). I use AppleJack and OnyX primarily. Once a year or so I'll also boot from an external and run DiskWarrior as well. That's about it.

Since the topic of Macintosh maintenance comes up regularly, I created a Web page devoted to the topic:

Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance
OS X Maintenance And Troubleshooting

The site does not cover cookies, as I don't consider them a routine maintenance task. You can easily turn cookies off in your browser, or delete them. But cookies aren't the evil that many would have you believe. You may just want to leave them alone. See:
Beware of Spyware by Christina Zeeh - DTG News Bytes

Flash cookies have been a recent hot topic. See:
You Deleted Your Cookies? Think Again | Epicenter | Wired.com
You can use Flush (free) to delete Flash cookies. (If you use Pandora, this will have the effect of erasing Pandora's settings.)

There are specific versions of OnyX for each version of OS X. Did you get the appropriate version of OnyX for your version of OS X?

Go here and pay close attention to the versions in that list, making sure to download the one for your version of OS X.

Click the Apple logo in the top left corner and select " About This Mac ".
That will tell you what version of OS X you are running.

I use Onyx as well but i don't have a set time for running it, more or less if i think about it at the end of the month or every couple months... never had a problem with it.
