Georgia state senator hopes to replace schoolbooks with iPads

The state of Georgia is reportedly considering a plan to get rid of conventional textbooks and shift middle school classrooms in the state to wireless iPads built by Apple, following positive iPad trials in place by schools around the US.

Paper books and products have been in classrooms for thousands of years. And now they want to replace all of this with a device less than a year old. That's really something.

If only my school did the same…

Well…probably won't happen for my school until I graduate.

something extremely wasteful, stupid, and badly thought out. you save on having to update textbooks, but honestly, what do you think will last longer, an ipad or a textbook?

Hmmm... Middle school students and expensive electronic equipment that's sensitive to shock, temperature and moisture and requires thought beforehand to keep the battery charged. This will work out well...

How much do you want to bet some 1st and 4th amendment lawsuits come out of this one at some point when photos, browsing history or text/email get "accidentally" checked by a public official/teacher and a kid gets expelled for a picture of a gun, something obscene or something politically incorrect?

Not too sure I agree with this for anything below the college level.

Over and above what XJ has pointed out:

In the name of being environmentally correct - yeah, let's switch over to using something from a limited and non-renewable source, very limited lifetime, newer replacements as older ones fail that will cause some strife as to who gets the newer models vs a renewable source that pretty much lasts until someone loses it or tears it up.
