hooking up macbook pro tv?

hi i have a 2008 macbook pro with a broken screen that im trying to hook up to a external display. was wondering if this is even possible because the screen wont turn on at all on the laptop its just black i also dont have a keyboard so im going to need to use the one on my laptop. i have the mini displayport to hdmi & i have a hdmi cable. any help on hooking this up would be appreciated thanks.

You could attempt to try hitting fn+F7

This should change display modes(mirrored or extended)

Doesn't work on the 2008 models on up. I wish it did. Apple replaced that keyboard shortcut and some others with the iTunes controls.

so i finnaly hooked it up to the tv and that seems to be working fine but When I turn it on the screen shows the apple and the spiral underneath it spinning like it should but it just goes to a white screen after that. i have seen some post saying to try and boot from the hard drive with the option key but that does nothing white screen then a black screen my comps a 2008 15 inch macbook pro and i havent used it since early 2009 its been in the box because of the broken lcd anybody kno whats going on?
