    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. I am new to Mac computers and can't figure out how to upload my videos taken via my video camera. With my PC, I would simply connect it via USB, and presto, there it was! With my mac, I can not for the life of me get my video onto my computer. I have a few different programs, iDVD, iMovieHD, iPhoto, none of them seem to be able to connect. Any help/suggestions would be very appreciated! :'(

Thanks!

We'd need more information. What version of OS X are you using, and what kind of video camera are you using? What file type does it save your footage as?

Uploading means getting videos from your computer onto a website. What you want to do is import footage. Are you sure you're using a USB cable, or is it a Firewire cable? iMovie should be the program you use to import your footage; are you sure you were following the steps correctly?

I have version 10.6.6 and a Sony DCR-DVD108 video camera. I am really new to this, I don't know what type of file it would save footage as, as I have not been able to get anywhere with it so far. I am definitely using a UBS cable, it will upload photos taken on my video camera, but not the video, I think I probably need a different kind of cord based on what I have been able to figure out. I have tried to manually get iMovie to upload video, rather than plug in my video camera and wait, however it isn't finding anything to import (if that makes sense?)

Thanks for your time.

The solution was very easy to find. I just Googled your model number and the very first result had all your product information. Here are the directions for getting your movies onto your Mac.

To transfer via USB (not UBS, heh), it says the camera's power adapter must be plugged in and the power switch on the camera should be turned off BEFORE you connect it to the computer. Once it's connected via USB cable, turn on the camera and a DVD icon should appear on your desktop. If you double click on it you should see a folder called "VIDEO_TS", which contains your movies. Copy and paste them into your hard drive somewhere.

The video files are the .vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder. iMovie does not recognise these files. Use MPEGStreamclip to convert them(it has a good batch convert feature) to Quicktime using the Apple Intermediate Codec if you want to edit them with iMovie.

I tried following the exact instructions of the Sony website (thanks so much for finding that, btw). A dvd icon never comes up, instead a message saying "You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click ignore." The pop-up menu includes all the contents of my computer, but there isn't a video_ts folder. Can I create this folder, or perhaps do I need another program that my computer doesn't have? Also, the dvd is not blank, I can watch it on the camcorder just fine! Again, thank you for your time!

Try putting the dvd into your Macs Superdrive. Also, the dvd may have to be finalizied first before the Mac will recognise it as a dvd.

The DVD mot likely needs to be finalized in the camera. If the DVD is one of the small mini-sized ones, do NOT put in in your superdrive.

Haha, it is a mini disc, it would be fun to try to get it out :p. Finalizing the disc made my computer recognize that it isn't a blank disc, it brought up the video_ts folder, I copied them into my hard drive, but I still can't view the footage. I am video camera illiterate, apparently.

I was able to get everything figured out. I took my video camera and my mac into the apple store. The tech was very helpful, all the things you guys were telling me to do was correct, I just needed a program that could convert the video type in order to be able to view and manipulate it on iMovie. I just wanted to thank you for both for you time and help. :D

Use MPEGStreamclip, and export to Quicktime using the Apple Intermediate Codec option for use with iMovie.
