Only have a Hitachi 160gb 5400 drive at the moment. Thinking of upgrading to a 500gb 7200 drive. Any recommended brand or type for the macs?

I would say it really doesn't matter. Just about any brand is fine (Seagate, WD, Hitachi, Toshiba, etc.). They're all pretty good...just shop for a good price. You could start with these guys:

Won't a 7200rpm drive drain more power when not connected to the A/C?

I have a 17" MPB with the 500gb 7200rpm hard drive. I am probably on my laptop 10 hours a day on average with my screen brightness all the way up and I seem to have quite a long battery life.

To be honest, I consider it to be such a minuscule difference on battery life. I would just opt for the 7200rpm to begin with and get a hard drive with a good cache size.

the momentus is 500gb 7200 rpm 16mb cache. best choice, imo.

Agree with Nick 110%.
OWC or NewEgg. Both are fine retailers and have great warranties, etc.
I have a 500GB 7200RPM Hitachi drive I bought from NewEgg several months ago and it is quiet, doesn't get super hot, and was easy to install. Plus I got a great price on it. :)

Who knows as you have not shared your computer details with us? The answer is no it will not make a noticeable difference in a MacBook.

As Nick advised go to OWC.
