Macbook pro external display problem

Hi I have had problems with my macbook pro. I have the mid 2010 13 inch model. I have tried to pair it with a external moniter via vga. I have apples mini display port to vga adapter, whenever i try to use the display it works for about 2 seconds and then it shuts off. Has anyone else had this problem and has advice on how to fix it please share.

Also i tried the monitor on bootcamp an I got the same results.Could it be the adapter, because it is brand new.

Never mind I found out that my monitor is broken
