applications don't load

When I download stuff it all seems to go well until I try to open the software.
The application's icon appears breifly in the imac's dock before dissappearing. What am I doning wrong?

If you could provide a little more info that would be great, i.e. Your Mac Specs, OS version and what you are trying to download, also what browser you are using. If you could also state the step-by-step process you took to try and open the program i.e. "Downloaded the program "such-and-such" using safari, it downloaded into my desktop as a .dmg, I mounted the .dmg and dragged the app into my apps folder, but when I click the program it bounces in the dock for a few seconds but then dissapears" or what-have-you.

The application must be installed first. Some applications download as an image file (dmg), others as an application, and yet others as an install package.

If the download is an application ready to go, just drag it to your applications folder. Click on it to open from the applications folder.

An image file must be opened and the application installed first as above before it will work. Package files typically come with an installer. Just follow the directions given in the installer.
