Install SSD in 2008 iMac?

None whatsoever if you have the skills and patience to open the iMac up and change out the hard drive to a SSD. Note that you'll likely need a 3.5" bracket adapter to fit the 2.5" SSD in.

Make sure you follow directions for opening the iMac up at iFixit: The free repair manual and also have the proper tools. (They also sell the tools.)

And the best bracket is the Icy Dock.

I seriously wished I would have dropped the cash for a 120 GB SSD when my original HD died this summer(thank God for Time Machine). It's kinda interesting how people have re-evaluated how much HD space they need when they see the performance benefits of an SSD and weight it against the price tag. One thing is for certain, if I don't replace the HD in my current iMac for an SSD, my next machine will certainly have one. Booting an 11" MBA from a complete shut down at Best Buy and witnessing the lightening fast boot time first hand made me an SSD believer. Off to 100% ready in under 20 seconds = awesome.

Yes. Mac Pro boots in less than 18 seconds. And not being a movie or iTunes person, space is not so vital and if I was, a second drive would be the shot for storing applications.

I used the Newer Tech AdaptaDrive 3.5"–2.5" adapter to mount a Samsung SSD into my early 2008 iMac. The adapter worked flawlessly.
