Imac Hard disk installation help

I tried to restore my IMAC, it an old IMAC I bought it in 2005-2006.
Now when I start it up, the desktop shows up and I see a blinking file. Then I researched this file for help and nothing I tried worked.

I tried repairing thru disk utility and it will not allow me to. I tried to see if it was a hardware problem, and ran the hardware test and nothing came up, it said nothing was wrong.

What should I do?

If you want to repair the hard drive, boot from the operating system install DVD. You do still have that? You cannot repair a drive you are booted from hence the need to boot from disc. What did you do when you tried to restore it?

May well need PMU or PRAM reset.

When you say you tried to "restore your iMac"...what do you mean...what did you do?
