I've used them before... for what they are, they are pretty decent performance wise, it will definitely get me through what I do daily.

Certainly will be better than what I had before my 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 Tower...

I had a Quicksilver 2002...800MHz, 1GB ram and it was a wee bit sluggish with 10.4.11....not bad though, it was certainly faster than my Pentium 4 I have now for some reason.

Just bought a eMac 1.42 (Has 512MB ram, but definitely maxing it out), and believe it or not this will be the fastest (and newest) Mac I have owned.

Gonna be a lot better than that 5500/250!;)

Do you mind sharing how much you paid for it...and where you got it (e-Bay, Craig's List, etc.)?

Sure, no problem... I bought it from this lot -

They have a little screen burn, but I could care less, it's most likely going to have an external monitor hooked up anyways.

Not a bad overall price for a 1.42ghz eMac.:)

Congratulations, I have the same model except my screen is in perfect shape, you almost can't tell it's a CRT, great screen. The machine runs tiger well but do upgrade the ram, I was working on a report for college (I sold my asus g50 and I'm set to receive my new asus ul30 Monday) and noted that neooffice plus safari puts the machine at a standstill. You will want a gig or better.

Yeah, it should do fine for what I do on a daily basis, which is mostly online forums, news, ebay, craigslist, etc. I don't game at all... so that helps.

Heck, I used a 1.7 Celeron (Yeah, eww) custom built I had from 2001? to 2008 because that's all I needed... my current custom built has second hand parts in it... My best computer right now is my AMD Dual Core Compaq laptop..... 4gb ram, 320gb HDD and Vista Premium.

Plus I plan to order the capacitor kit from here in case I have a problem -

Does anyone know if when you hook up an external monitor to an eMac if it automatically sends the signal to the new display or if you have to tell it to in system preferences?

I think that you're going to like my answer!;)

Yes...the signal to the external monitor is sent automatically. But "officially" the eMac is only supposed to be capable of "mirroring" only on an external display. But (another but);)...there is a "hack" available that allows the external monitor to work in "extended desktop" mode.

In the "Display" preferences...you simply switch from mirror to extended desktop on the external monitor.

I've done this "hack" on an iMac G4...and it worked great!:)

HTH,

Just added ANOTHER Mac to the fleet! I just keep finding them! Saw a lady carrying out a iMac to the trash this morning... I stopped her and asked her if there was anything wrong with it... she said nope, so home it came!

Hooked it up, and it's a iMac Summer 2001, 500MHz G3 (750cx). Has a gig of ram and OS X 10.3. Woo-hoo!

You are sooooo lucky!!!:)

Imagine someone just throwing out a perfectly working G3 iMac. Yeah I know it's 10 years old & only worth maybe (at most) $50 or less (maybe even free, just like you got it)!

But hey...like they say..."One person's trash is another person's treasure!;)

Congrats on the find,

- Nick

That's an AWESOME find! It's one of the "faster" iMac G3's, has maxed out ram, and it has one of the newer OS's that'll run on that Machine. :D

Got the eMac today.... burn in is not as bad as I expected, there's a VERY faint image of a login screen. I'm actually on it right now, and it's great... I put Tiger on it. The case is very nice as well, no scratches or cracks. Very satisfied with my $44.99 purchase.

50voltphantom, how does 10.5 run on your eMac? I assuming it's pretty good?

I use my eMac all the time as an internet machine and it runs Leopard just fine. My parents have a 1.0 GHz model that they're running Leopard on so I didn't have any worries about running it on a 1.42 GHz model. They are just a fantastic Mac for the price you can get them at lately. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I currently have 1 GB of RAM installed because when I ordered it I had only read about Apple's maximum RAM spec and not the actual maximum (2 GB) so I'll probably upgrade again someday. I'm also planning on doing an LCD screen mod in the very near future. The screen on mine is "just" starting to show it's age.

Actually I JUST put 2GB of REALLY high quality Corsair XMS memory (I paid HUGE money for it new) in the eMac a few minutes ago... and the performance difference is crazy. I essentially quadrupled the memory, so it's a huge difference. Geekbench score is 864... not insane by any means but really good.
