I'm planning on purchasing an external hdd which I am planning on networking through my router. At my work place during the summer when I connect to one of our server via an iMac, I log in using my credentials and then I'm given a choice of connecting to applications, documentation, movies, music etc. Is it possible to do this with an external hdd that I purchase by partitioning it or are those categories I am seeing separate servers? Thanks!

This is something the macs display. After putting in my credentials on the mac to log into the server I get a scroll box with about 5 options ranging from movies to documentation. When I select the one I want I hit connect and a blue icon appears on my desktop. (mounting the server I guess)
