Being relatively new to Mac OS, I was just wondering if any of the past OS installments had any real flops (similar to the disaster in the Windows realm, known as "ME") Thanks!

I personally don't think in the OS realm there has been any major flops... there have however been some hardware flops definitely like the Apple Newton, Macintosh Portable, Macintosh TV, Motorola ROKR and of course the Apple Pippin.

The initial version of Mac OS X (10.0 "Cheetah") would probably qualify. It was the first effort to migrate from the classic Mac OS, but performed so badly and was missing so much in features that 10.1 "Puma" was a free upgrade.

Cheetah was only ever a beta operating system.

System 7 was not real crash hot, and came on about fifteen floppies. The 7.01 and 7.1 updates did improve things, and the system really found its feet with OS 7.6.1.

Say what??

The Newton was a HUGE hit! VERY popular, particularly with managers and doctors. And it would have gone on being a big hit if Palm hadn't come up with a more efficient handwriting technique that worked more consistently ... by the time Apple improved the handwriting recognition, everyone had moved to Palm.

The Pippin, likewise, was most certainly not a "flop," since it was never released. It never had a chance to be judged a flop OR a hit.

Now the G4 Cube ... THAT was a flop. Very VERY cool for its time, but overpriced.

Fair enough the Newton was a hit with production of it for 6 years but it's amazing $1,000 price tag even then took the biscuit a little bit, the Pippin was released with just over 40,000 units being sold, however it did come out around the time playstation & N64 were dominating the scene.

I suppose I should have included the Apple "Puck" mouse and the "20th anniversary macintosh" as better examples...

I actually have a Newton. I just need to find a charger and some batteries.

I think the iPhone alarm clock debacle would qualify... :D
