Does anyone know how to unlock the hd so that it can be partitioned? Currently in diskutility everything is greyed out because the full amount od disk space is taken up with the mac partition and I cannot see any options for chaging this.

How much space is left free on your hdd? Also why do you want to partition it?

Do not even try to partition the drive without the Panther OS X.3 install discs as you may format the drive and have nothing at all on it.

Suggest you try Ubuntu forums. The external optical drive would need to be a Firewire drive as G4's will not boot from USB, even USB2.
