Verizon was 'never in the running' for original iPhone, says CEO
AppleInsider | Verizon was 'never in the running' for original iPhone, says CEO
Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg admitted in an interview Thursday that the nation's largest wireless network was "never in the running" for the first-generation iPhone because Apple was focused on the GSM technology.
I think this + Verizon's stubbornness caused them to get the iphone now. Sure would you accept a phone by someone with no previous phone experience and 100% their way? I don't blame them for saying no. Most people would have. But most people would have realised the same was said of the itunes store and the ipod. But they triumphed. As did the iphone.

Mind you the arguement that a GSM iphone could be used in many more countries then a CDMA one is a valid point too. And not wanting to develop the 2 iphones at once GSM was probably the better of the 2 technologies to use. Simply cause you can get into more hands worldwide.

The full quote from Verizon's CEO

That was all part of the sort of mating dance they were going through. But most of that [was] used not against us, but used against the carriers they ended up signing with, all right? So no, I didn't think the terms were all that serious because we were never in the running.

Basically, he thinks that Apple's original discussions with Verizon were just a ruse to put pressure on Cingular. Which may or may not be true; it's certainly something Apple or any big company would do to get the best deal.

Or it may be his selective memory.

The problem with Verizon and Apple from the beginning was always that Verizon wanted their reps and their CS people to do everything with the iPhone from day one..

they wanted their reps to sell it, their techs to assess it, their techs to fix it...
all they wanted from Apple was the phone, nothing else.... so when Verizon couldn't get what they wanted on their end, they passed on it... now they have finally realized that they will never get it, and to keep people from going to AT&T they had to cave...
