partition and RAID question??

3.06GHz Intel Core i3 processor , WD 2tb ext HD, Holla!!!
Im still new to the mac world and basicly everything that has to do with it lol.

So, i've been reading about external drives and i'm still unclear about what Partition and Raid does for our external HD.........If someone can explain to me what exactly Partition and raid does, that'll be great!!!!
