What's the best anti-virus/malware/trojan software for mac? My boss's 2010 iMac has been having virus issues (yes, it was actually a virus. Verified by our programmer and IT guy). His computer is inexplicably slow and buggy again, and I think it's likely another virus as everything is up to date on the OS.

As for one. The new MAS has the Virus Barrier Express which is selling for free ATM. You will keep hearing about this but use the search function in the forum and it will show you what others think.

If there was, it would be blogged about and even front page news as it would be one of the rarest events known to man .... I think your IT guy might need to rethink his career if he thinks he found a virus. If it turns out to be one ill eat my shirt off my back

You'll not get many answers here as far as "best" av app. There just are not very many of us except those that just recently switched from Windows and a few that try to protect their windows using friends by not passing one along that use one. Consequently, there just aren't a lot of folks that have tried even one av app, much less several in order to suggest a "best".
There are as of yet, no virii in the wild that can affect OS X. It is possible the boss has a trojan if he's downloaded, installed and provided his master password to either pirated software or video codecs from porn sites. One of these would be re-directing his web browsing to pages he doesn't want to go to.
If that's not it, it'd be much easier telling what sort of issues there are and trying to find a fix for them. Could be a bad preference file, need a permissions repair or just a software glitch - they happen.

You need a new IT guy. Most of them are experienced in Windows only and if they don't understand it, it is a virus pure and simple.

Im very new to mac, but i've definitely heard of Mac Viruses....
but its possible that he downloaded a keylogger that using up a high % of CPU. Is there something like task manager in Mac OS X that OP could use to check?

Hi blicket, first off I agree with bobtomay. at least he put it gently. I have fooled around with AVG's free linkscanner for mac AVG | LinkScanner for Mac | Online virus protection for MacOS . however, I did find that this had some negative effects on my system (slowed it down). You just simply do not need the AV on Mac, it can be tough to get your mind around it if you are like I was and had been using a PC for many years. I would be more inclined to check out possible soft ware issues on your boss's system.

Could it be possible that your iMac runs Windows as well as OSX? The Windows part can get infected on a Mac - but just the Windows-partitioned part of your HD, I think.
To me, that's the only way the Mac could acquire a virus -- the Windows half of a partitioned HD.
And, if that happened, I believe it can't affect the OSX half.
