external hard drive for backup?????

To be honest though most external hdds are compatible, just get one that is big enough for the amount of used space on your MBP plus leave enough room for incremental backups of changed files.

Large, reliable and cheap 
I got a 1.5 TB Toshiba for £60 that I use. But google around, 2TB are around that price already.
WD, Toshiba, Iomga and Lacie have all proved reliable for me personally.
