I am in India and trying to connect my Mac 10.6 to Internet using ethernet cable, the ISP here are familiar to PC only. (I am not using any Router at home)

The way the guys conntected my PC to internet is

1. My Netork Places --> Local Area Connection Properties --> Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) Properties

2. Choose the radio button : "Use the following IP address" (and enter all the IPs manually as below)

IP Address : 172.19.7.242
Subnet mask : 255.255.252.0
Default gateway : 172.19.5.1

Use the following DNS server addresses

Preferred DNS server : 172.19.5.1
Alternate DNS server : 202.56.240.5

3.I go to their site : http://172.19.5.1 and login. Internet starts working.

I tried this in Mac 10.6.

1. System Preferences-->Network-->Select "Ethernet" from left panel --> Location: Automatic

2. Enter the following

Configure IPv4 : Manually
IP Address: 172.19.7.242
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: Left blank (as i am not connected to any home router)
DNS Server: 172.19.5.1
Search Domains : blank

3. Click Apply --> Changes the Status to : "Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 172.19.7.242"

However it is not connected to internet :Angry-Tongue:.

Please advise

G'day and welcome to the forums.

If you are using the ethernet cable you must be connecting the other end to a modem/router. If so, type in your browser the IP of the modem/router and go to basic set up and you will be asked to enter your account name and password as supplied to your ISP.

in India - ethernet cable not working

I am in India, trying to get my MacBook connected trhough an ethernet connection that is working on the house PC desktop.

In the network window it says:
Status: Connected
Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 192.168.1.2

I am 'Using DHCP'

The settigns come up as:
IP: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1

I have tried 'Using DHCP with manual address' and changing some of the numbers around but nothign seems to work.

I've restarted and reset various times.

I am wondering if it is something to do with settings on the router here which doesn't seem to have a brand name (this is India).

Any suggestions or ideas greatly appreciated!

Have you tried accessing the "house" router? It's address (which you type in to the address bar of Safari (not actually the best browser for setting up by the way) is 192.168.1.1 and you should get a box coming up for "user" (most often "admin") and "password" (either nothing - return - or admin).
Even if it's a ripped off copy, I doubt the r/o merchants can be bothered to do anything fancy with the firmware.
Good luck

Configure IPv4 : Manually

Try that and post back

Don't change the subnet mask. 255.255.252.0 is a valid subnet mask, indicating there are 1022 hosts on the subnet instead of the "normal" 254. This is normal for large ISPs. If you look at your IP, you are trying to connect to 172.19.5.x from a 172.19.7.x address - different subnets if you use 255.255.255.0. If you use 255.255.252.0, you'll be on the same subnet and should be able to see it.

Your Router setting will be the same as Default Gateway - same thing, different terms.

Also, it's possible when the DSL modem was configured, it was bound to the hardware address (MAC address) of the PC, and since the Macintosh doesn't match, it can't connect. Here, it's usually as simple as unplugging the DSL modem for a couple of minutes to flush the memory, reconnecting it and then connecting the new computer.
