Hi,

My iPod Video 5G has broken. I'm confident it's the hard drive as it makes a mechanical cyclic clicking noise.

I have previously replaced the screen myself, so believe I could replace the HD very easily.

The current HD is 30GB, but if possible I'd like to upgrade it to the 80GB version - all can be sourced on ebay.

Is this possible, or is the casing / shape / firmware of the original ipod specialised to accommodate 30GB HD's only?

I'm also making a bit of a gamble assuming it is the HD at fault, what do you think.

Many thanks.

I think it depends on the height (thickness) of the hard drive. As I recall, the 60GB version of the 5G iPod was a good bit thicker than the 30GB - and that was likely to accommodate a thicker drive.

I would check ifixit.com - they have a lot of good information about the eccentricities of the iPods (they sell parts too and will show you everything that is available for your particular device).
