will the 32bit kernel make use of my 12 gigs of ram. With my old winblows system i HAD to run 64bit os to get past 3.5 gig ram limit. I am running virtualbox with ubuntu and was wondering if I should be booting 64bit for the extra ram. The apple site says that the os will default to the best kernel, but i think it will always be 32bit unless you specify with the 64 keys on boot.

Yes both 32 bit and 64bit kernels will make use more than 4gigs of ram. The difference in the kernels is mostly cpu efficiency, which isn't a deal at all. You'll want to run 32bit, just in case there's no driver errors with 64 bit kernel.
