weird fix to photoshop crashes

I've looked everywhere (as far as I could anyway) for a solution to the problem of Photoshop CS5 crashing when I try to open file. OS 10.6.5 BTW.
I have found that I can open the filel in bridge and then double click and it opens in photoshop without a problem. There must be some clue there. Can anybody help determing why photoshop crashes when I try to open file? Your help would be appreciated

photoshop crashes

Well, hold on now. Yeah file opened when going through Bridge but now it crashes when applying crop tool
How frustrating can this get. It looks like Mac or Adobe would come up with an answer, considering all the internet entries about problems with photoshop and OS 10.6
