So my parents have an iMac and something has changed with the display.

Now it seems the desktop takes up too much space on the screen and you have to hover your cursor near the bottom for the dock to pop-up and you have to hover your cursor near the top for the clock and toolbar to pop up.

I am assuming this is some setting but i cannot find it. How do i fix this?

System Preferences > Displays. Change the resolution. From the sounds of it, you have an inappropriate resolution selected.

Try this: Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Dock. At the bottom, make sure "automatically hide and show the dock" is unchecked.

It sounds to me that this iMacs display has been "zoomed" somehow (since you have an issue at the top & the bottom of the display).

Two ways to fix this:

1. Go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences > Universal Access > turn "Zoom" to "Off".

2. Use the three key combination..."Command + Option + 8"...to turn the "Zoom" off.

HTH,

Now that I think about it, I think pigoo3 is probably right. Odds are that your parents accidentally zoomed in. Hold down control and with the mouse, use the scroll wheel to scroll out (scroll backwards/towards you).

EDIT: I type too slow!
