Hi all,
Went away for a couple of days, so shut down my iMac,
When I get back, the iMac has powered itself up, and shows the login screen.
Why would it do this? And if I don't want it to do this, do I have to physically unplug it from the mains?
Thanks

iMac is 2007 2.8GHz Core 2 duo, 4G ram, running OS X 10.6.5

Do you have it to auto turn on at a certain time?

No. Nothing set there.
I do have Applecare. And maybe I should phone them, but I may be getting slightly cynical about the help they give. I have phoned them before regarding sleep issues, which I still have. They basically boil it down to:

reset PRAM
reset SMC

This seems to solve sleep problems for about a day, then they start again.
But I read somewhere that these two resets shouldn't be used that often.

Open System Preferences, Energy Saver, click on the Power Adapter tab.

Make sure you have not checked off the box that says: "Wake for network access". And also the box that says: "Startup automatically.........."

None of them checked.
Do you think I have to simply unplug from the mains, or is there something amiss?

For now I would unplug the machine from the AC main circuit. There is obviously something wrong if it turns on by itself. It may have something to do with the sleep problems you wrote about. Normally a SMC reset should cure the sleep problem and the coming on by itself, however, you say that you've already done that several times. Time to take it on in and let Apple look at it.
