Hi
We have just purchased a Mac 14.1.1 from a friend. After trying to play a dvd we got an error saying region codes do not match but nothing prompting us to change? How do we find out what region its currently set on?

Your Mac should be set for the region that it was bought in:
DVD Region Codes Explained

Normally if you insert a dvd from a different region, iDVD will prompt you to change the region. However, you can only do this 5 times. After that it's set permanently. Your Mac may have had it's fifth change.
