iMac PowerPC G3, 350 MHz, 320MB RAM, 80GB HDD, OS X 10.3.9
Hi, i recently bought an iMac G3 with OS X version 10.3.9. The problem seems to be that it flash or java doesnt seem to be supported. For example, on a site such as facebook, it is not displayed correctly. It says the flash and java plugins are installed but the problem persists. Also, i am unable to install newer versions of safari and itunes. And if i try to install firefox, I get the error message 'unable to mount'. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Error message on Safari and iTunes 'Bill of Materials not found'

G'day and welcome to the forums.

G3 iMacs are pretty old machines, pre 2000 in most cases, and Panther is an old, old operating system alas. Further the limited video card will always cause lag in video playback,

How fast is the processor? 350MHz? 400MHz? Faster? Slower?

Theses old browsers will not support the new flash upgrades...only way around it is to install a PPC version of Linux.

Don't get me wrong you can upgrade the imac G3, but only very limited, also they are a pain in the back-side to get into.

I know. But it has already been opened up and had new RAM and a new HDD. So was just wondering if similar things could be done?

If it has had new RAM, thats probably the most it can take, graphics cards on the G3 slot-loaders are part of the logic board so pretty much impossible i'm afraid.
Fraid that G3 is about pimped up as it can be ;P

If you have a 400MHz or faster you could run Tiger along with newer browsers, etc.. I wouldn't put any more money into that machine. For $100 you can get a G4 eMac that will run Leopard.

Sadly as it is a 350 what you have is all you are going to get. Shame you did not inquire before outlaying your cash. You are never going to get much worthwhile for so little ~ a dact of computing life alas.

Well thanks very much for your help anyway guys! It's a shame, but I only paid £20 for it anyway! I still have my pc, but I'd rather use this mac without flash/java anyway! Just have to get saving for my Mac! Any recommendations?

I use old Macs to surf with all the time. Imacs, even a Powermac 9600(G3) I just dont go to places that need flash like Utube...do that with a newer machine. Theres like 10 Macs with in arms reach right now..they all have different uses. I think its a bad idea to put your whole life on just one machine.

Go here: Camino. Download. Releases

And get the most up to date version that you can for your OS. I find that using Camino helps a lot when browsing sites containing flash and other CPU intensive tasks, but that G3 is still one of the much slower ones (Considering they went up to 700 MHz) Don't expect to get Youtube out of it, but it's still okay for things like e-mail and word processing. :)

I personally don't like Safari...I find it clunky and slow for some reason... :p
