Found a local guy that has 8GB (2x4GB sticks) from his mac mini (which should work in my unibody macbook pro) for $150, but OWC has it for $117. Is there any advantage with going with original apple ram or should I just save the money?
There are some things you should always buy original brand-name parts for, but RAM isn't one of them. I've used OWC RAM before and have never had a problem with it. The people there are great to deal with too.
There are some things I always will buy brand name for (computer case parts, manufacturer-specific appliance equipment, auto parts) but computer RAM has never been one of them. I think the only genuine Apple RAM upgrade I've ever had was the extra 1GB I had installed in my MacBook the day I bought it, and I've used Apple computers for almost 22 years.
Like someone else said, you can get much better deals online.
Last week I got 2x4GB of Crucial RAM for my MBP on Newegg for $91 shipped. They have a similar price on G.Skill RAM. The OWC stuff is good too, but I recently had to RMA a couple sticks from them due to an apparent bad batch they had.
