I have a MacBook(not a MacBook Pro). I also have a Canon Vixia HF M30 HD video camera. I have no idea how to get the video onto my computer in HD. I do not have a firewire port.

Did you try using an SD card reader and importing from it into iMovie?

At that point you can select what format/resolution you want to import your file. If you desire you can also import it into iPhoto (not sure of the benefit of doing this, but is a possibility). I generally import the videos shot with my still camera into iPhoto, and import from there into iMovie if I want to do any editing.
