airport extreme issue

Main-11" Air, iPhone 6+, iPad Mini 3, Hi-Fi Extras- Too many to count
I just got the airport extreme for christmas and i got my printer hooked up to it and then i unplugged it to install a flash drive to work as backup(time machine). how do i use the flash drive for this or do i have to use an actual hard drive?
