How does eclipse work on mac?

I dont know if I have posted this thread in the right place, but this seems like a fitting place. So I am currently learning Java and I have been told Eclipse is a good tool to write Java with and I dont know how eclipse works on mac. So if someone could explain how it connects to the terminal to run the Java that would be great.

eclipse is nice, another one I like is jEdit

The application itself runs fine. I use it for Python development and it works really well.
