You cannot upgrade the OS online, and we would need a more detailed spec of its RAM and processor to figure out what version of OSX it can run.

Major OS upgrades require you to purchase the CD. If you happen to have an Intel iMac with at least 2 GB of memory, you can purchase the Snow Leopard (10.6) version of OS X for $29 and do the upgrade..

Whichever way it comes out, Mac or Windows, to upgrade to a newer OS you gotta spend a buck or two or more! Avoid pirate sites like the plague.
