So I brought my iMac G3 downstairs, set it up on a little table, and plugged in via Ethernet to my router. Instant Death. All 3 computers become unable to browse. I checked Network and it says "This computer has a self-assigned IP address and maybe unable to browse the web" How do I fix this? Why does my router instant K.O. when my iMac G3 is plugged in? I've tried everything that I know and I'm stumped. :| Any suggestions?

-Thanks

Interesting. Almost sounds like it's got an IP conflict with the router itself. Is the G3 set to use DHCP?

Yes it is. Same as the iMac and iBook. I've never encountered anything like this before it's just like "plug in" "DEATH!!" I never even got any pages to load on the G3. :(

Have you tried plugging it in, releasing the IP and then renewing?

Releasing the IP and then renewing? How do I do that?

What OS are you running? 10.3? 10.4? Sometimes the way to release and renew is different with different versions of OSX.

The G3 is running 10.1 and the iBook and iMac G4 are both running 10.4 (If that makes a difference) :p

Well, I unplugged the router and went straight from the Modem > G3 and it's working fine. Now I just need to figure out a way to get the router and the G3 to play nice with each other...

What router (Brand and Model) is that? I might have some ideas.

It's a D-Link DI-524 I've gotten the G3 to the point where it shows the Subnet Mask and Router, but will not assign the computer a working IP address. (Manually inserting one didn't work either.) :(

So when you choose in 10.1 Manual IP, what IP are you putting in there? If your Dlink IP is 192.168.1.1 then try 192.168.1.95. Just be sure it does not conflict with any other computer on the router. If your Dlink IP is 192.168.0.1 then try a manual address of 192.168.0.62. I just made up the last numbers.

Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0 for the first IP I gave you.

I have a manual IP on my main iMac as I have certain ports open just for that computer so I want to be sure the iMac always gets the right IP address that matches the open ports!

Oh wow, I have been working for three hours today on trying to get a G5 iMac and a Macbook to connect wirelessly via a Belkin 70DD to the 'net. Spent 45 minutes speaking to a gentleman in India after using the Belkin 0800 number - fruitless!

Cut and run I think, ditch the Belkin (cwa, plse take note :)) and head for a D-Link.

Here are other IP numbers to try - 192.168.0.20, or 192.168.2.1. You can also try http://d-link to see if your G3 will connect via that route.

Well, I suppose we're on the right track here, I plugged the G3 in and we didn't instant K.O.! :) But I've tried both IP's that you two have suggested, and now I can't get the "Router" section to show anything... I'm not sure what to throw out the window first...the router or the G3. :Grimmace:

I've manually inserted the IP address, Subnet Mask, and Router and still nothing. I have everything in there that it should need to connect and it won't!! Seriously what is wrong with this thing?! :Shouting: I'm really, really, REALLY frustrated here. (Been working on this for 6 hours total, 3 today, 3 yesterday.) Any other ideas guys? (Besides using the router for target practice?) :Grimmace: ....

I will do some more thinking on it and get back to you. I was going to say to be sure and put in the router address if you did it manually. You did. Can you list the address's you put in manually?

Sure.

iMac G3 set manually:
IP - 192.168.0.102
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Router - 192.168.0.1

And here the other 2 working computers for comparison. Both set to use DHCP.

iMac G4:

IP - 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Router - 192.168.0.1

Ibook G4 connected via Wifi:

IP - 192.168.0.101
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Router - 192.168.0.1

In theory, the G3 should work fine with that manual address right? :| But when I plug the G3 in and set it to use DHCP. The iBook and iMac G4 both go to a 169 IP address? And are unable to browse. :\

Those IP's should work just fine. This has me scratching my head for sure! :D

I have so little experience with 10.1. I do have it here but really do not use it as the apps are so old and you can't use anything newer.

One thing to try JUST in case. Did you try a reset of the router and then setting it back up? I figure it can't hurt, but there is something very strange going on with your iMac I feel. Since it does work with just the modem plugged it, networking is working though.

Another thing popped into my head. Have you tried a different Ethernet cable or using the same one each time you try the iMac G3? Just wondering if it has maybe one broken wire. I remember something way back when that happened with me that I was having some very strange issues.

I am drawing straws here, but let me know just in case.

Yes, this definitely is weird! :| I have tried resetting my router, and my modem. I even unplugged both for 5 minutes to be sure. I haven't tried a new Ethernet cable. (Although this one is brand new, just opened it yesterday) I'll give it a shot switching them. :p
