Not sure about other people but every morning before work I always have a quick scan of the news, read latest RSS feeds and play iTunes while I'm getting ready for work.. Not that boot time is a problem but find it easier just to put the machine to sleep at night rather than switch it off.

Anyone else do the same? Could it cause problems later in the future?

No need to turn it off. Just let it sleep like you are doing. I have been doing this for over 3 years now. :)

Either is fine. I never shut mine off, but they always sleep. I use to be in the camp of just leave your computers running 24x7, but as I have gotten older and wiser I now tell people to power them down or put them to sleep. It won't hurt anything leaving them on, but you are just wasting power.

The Macs in my house are generally turned off at night, except the eMac in the living room because it is used so frequently, I just let it go to sleep.

Like mdfuller, I used to let my iMac run 24/7, rebooting every two weeks or so as a maintenance thing.

Then I read a lot (mainly here!) and started sleeping my iMacs, but never shutting them down unless part of a "restore or recovery" thing, ie when solving a problem (rare).

iMacs suffer a lot of optical drive failures. I wonder if laving them on 24/7 has any bearing on this?

I like to let my MBP sleep from time to time, it does dream too, it scuffs it's lid back and forth while it's dreaming of chasing and hunting down the ms logo.

Usually I do turn it off though as it boots up in like 15 seconds.

Switched off. Every night. Don't get why people don't shut them down. They don't take any time to boot again.

I usually turn off everything at night, simply because I have a lot of stuff in my room in my student flat that uses electricity compared to my flatmates. This means I can turn the sockets off at the wall. I also like not having the blinking lights from all the external HDDs and the subwoofer.

In actual fact, electronic items, such as computers, amplifiers etc can suffer less "ware and tare" if left on 24/7 and "sleeping" when not in use. This is because when the item is switched on there is a large initial surge of energy through the PSU etc which can ultimately reduce the life of components within the equipment.

Sometimes I shut down my computer, but most of the time I just put it to sleep during the night. And then wake it up when I wake up ;D

While this may be true, I certainly don't feel this issue is anywhere near the same as it was in the 80s & 90s. Well, maybe with those $350 desktop machines it might be. Pretty much all of our electronic components are vastly improved today vs that time period.

Many high end audio receivers today, typically do not "turn off" when you hit that remote button, but merely go into a sleep state to avoid this power on surge.

Don't believe in 30 yrs now, I've ever shut down a computer except as required or when I was going to be out of town for a week or longer.

My own recommendation to others:

If you're using your computer multiple times a day, I wouldn't suggest you shutting down and restarting 3, 4, 5 or more times a day.
Shutting it down at night and turning it on in the morning, this should be a non-issue with most of today's electronics.

Researching this today. I've always powered off at all sockets on all equipment at night. More safety than green I confess.

I have a imac all-in-one.

Is there any CMOS type battery in there to save my sleep settings if power is turned off, if so, how long is it good for?

I suppose I could fit a surge protector, maybe I should do that anyway :)
