Is the iPad capable of spreadsheet software, like excel or numbers?

Yes- there is a relatively small but definite selection of quality spreadsheet apps for the iPad. My suggestion would be Apple's Numbers for iPad. It's only 10 bucks and is quite impressive. I personally have no use for spreadsheet software on my iPad, but if I did I would buy Numbers :)

I second the recommendation of Numbers for iPad.

I have it and pages and find they work very well
