When I edit text in a cell of EXCEL on a Windows-PC, I can use text wrapping and go to the next line within the cell by keying ALT+ENTER.
How can I do the same on my macbook using EXCEL of the MS Office for Mac-package? Nothing happens with ALT+ENTER.

Well, technically, the Mac keyboard doesn't have an ALT key. ;)

I know that "wrap" is in a dialog box accessible from a menu in Office 2004 for Mac. I can look for it if no one else responds before I get to my Mac. In the meantime, have you looked in Excel Help?

At least in 2011, inserting a line break is control-option-return.

Here you go (in 2004)

Format > Cells... > Alignment > check box: Wrap Text

Format > Row > AutoFit
