Mail Re-Indexing

Not sure what has changed, but nearly every time I launch my Mail application and Get Mail it asks me to quit or re-index my mail. Have done this several times but this hasn't stopped the problem. I have also tried removing the "envelope" files and also renamed the .MAC folders, but no success. Has anyone had experience of this? Very perplexed

This is happening on my Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.5.8
