Hi,
I'd like to backup all system files and be able to restore them later on. Is there a program that can do what System restore does for Windows?

To clarify, I want all system files and application data to be restored to an earlier state (removing new apps and etc.), with the personal files and documents intact.

Ok, but I want to make a single restore point. I don't want to have time machine activated all the time.

Is there a way to do that?

There is no Windows system restore like functionality in OS X. Time Machine will give you the opportunity to go back to whatever state you want, but comes with all the requirements that you're already aware of..
